Alan Hall Retires, 36 Years of Service to PLSJ

Saturday, March 30, 2019

PLSJ’s Alan Hall is retiring the end of March aft er passionately dedicating 49 years of his life to the library profession.
Alan grew up in Marietta, Ohio and began working at his high school library in 10th grade at the request of his favorite
teacher Mrs. Opal Bole. Mrs. Bole was Alan’s second grade teacher who later transferred to the high school as the librarian.
She thought Alan would do well working in the library during Study Hall time. She also worked evenings, part-time
in the town’s public library where she recommended Alan to be hired as a Page. From 1970-1975, Alan shelved books
and such for $1 an hour at the Washington County Public Library. Thus beginning his library career.

Alan earned a B.S. from WVU and holds a Master of Library Science from Case Western Reserve University. Before
arriving to Steubenville, Alan worked at I.F. Freiberger Library in Cleveland, Ohio then as Director at the Delphos Public
Library. In 1983, library trustees hired Alan as Director of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jeff erson County.

Now looking back at his accomplishments, Alan said he is proud of fully automating the library system and that PLSJ
was one of the fi rst of four libraries to join the automation network that today includes 93 library systems in Ohio. Additionally,
Alan noted that when he arrived to Steubenville the library owned one parcel of property (Main Library) and
today PLSJ owns 35 parcels. He supervised the remodeling of the library branches in Adena, Brilliant, and Tiltonsville
and built new buildings for Dillonvale-Mt. Pleasant, Schiappa, Toronto, and now the renovation and expansion of the
Main Library. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve Jeff erson County. It’s pleasing to help with the informational
needs of the whole county,” said Alan.

Locally, Alan served on committees and/or boards of OSU Extension Advisory Committee, Steubenville Rotary, Community
Foundation of Jeff erson County, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Historic Fort Steuben, and the Steubenville
Historic Landmarks Commission. Professionally, he has served on the Government Relations Committee for the Ohio
Library Council, Delegate to the Ohio White House Conference on Libraries, Offi cer for the Western Ohio Regional
Library Development System, Southeast Chapter Coordinator, 1992-1994 President for the Ohio Library Association,
Legislation Committee for OLA. He was named Librarian of the Year in 1989 by the Ohio Library Association.
